Starting May 7, 2025, if you want to fly within the United States or enter certain federal buildings, you will need a REAL ID.
This is a new federal requirement to improve security and make identification safer and more consistent across all states.
What Is a REAL ID?
A REAL ID is a special driver’s license or ID card that meets federal security standards.
You can recognize it easily: it has a gold star on the top right corner.
Without a REAL ID, you may not be allowed to board domestic flights or enter some government facilities.
How to Know If You Already Have One
- Check your driver’s license or ID card.
- Look for a gold star at the top corner of your card.
If you see the gold star, you are ready!
If not, you will need to get a REAL ID.

How to Get Your REAL ID
To get your REAL ID, you must visit a Nevada DMV office.
You will need to bring certain documents to prove your identity, such as:
- A valid passport or birth certificate
- Proof of your Social Security Number
- Two documents showing your Nevada address (like a utility bill or bank statement)
